Embankment failure on golf courses typically begins with surface drainage channeling — rainfall tracks down the embankment face, eroding a rill that widens with each season. On commercial waterfront properties, wave action and vessel wake load the embankment base, undercutting the slope. Both conditions are observable and respond well to early intervention.
How we assess and restore embankments.
Embankment assessment evaluates soil profile, slope geometry, drainage patterns, vegetation cover, and erosion rate. We determine whether the appropriate response is vegetative stabilization (native sod, hydro-seeding, erosion control blankets), structural reinforcement (rip-rap toe protection, retaining wall at the base), or excavation and regrading. FDEP permit class follows from the approach and the proximity to natural water bodies.

Embankments in the Indian River Lagoon watershed are subject to FDEP stormwater rules and nutrient runoff regulations. Any project that alters drainage patterns or introduces fill adjacent to natural water bodies requires ERP review. Vegetative stabilization approaches typically qualify for faster FDEP review than structural approaches.

Vegetative stabilization is specified for embankments with stable base geometry and moderate erosion rates — native sod or hydro-seeding with erosion control blankets provides permanent stabilization at lower cost. Rip-rap toe protection is specified for embankments subject to wave action or velocity flow at the base — it arrests further undercutting while vegetation establishes. Retaining walls are specified when the embankment geometry requires structural support at the base to prevent slope failure.
